  • NYY Starting Pitcher #36
Yankees placed RHP Clarke Schmidt on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 27, with a right lat strain.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Schmidt will be shut down from throwing for the next 4-6 weeks, which likely knocks him out until sometime after the All-Star break. Schmidt was slated to take the ball on Saturday against the Giants, so New York will have to dip into their organizational depth to fill the void. The 28-year-old righty will press pause on an impressive breakthrough campaign as he’s allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his 11 starts this season, recording a stellar 2.52 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67/20 K/BB ratio across 60 2/3 innings of work. It’s a significant loss for the Yankees, and fantasy managers as well. There should be a clearer timetable for his return once he’s cleared to resume throwing in a few weeks.

Clarke Schmidt pitched well in a losing effort against the Padres on Sunday afternoon, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits over his five-plus innings of work.
The right-hander racked up six strikeouts on the afternoon while issuing three free passes. All of the damage done against him came in the sixth inning, as Schmidt began the inning by allowing Jake Cronenworth to reach on an error and then issuing a walk to Manny Machado. He then turned the ball over to the bullpen who allowed both inherited runners to score. Schmidt got 16 swinging strikes on 101 pitches on the day — 10 of those on his cutter — while posting a CSW of 28 percent. He’ll carry an outstanding 2.52 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a 67/20 K/BB ratio (60 2/3 innings) into Saturday’s showdown against the Giants in San Francisco.

Clarke Schmidt allowed two earned runs and four hits over five innings in the Yankees’ loss to the Mariners.
The two earned runs Schmidt allowed came on a two-run homer by Dylan Moore on a pitch that was off the outside black of the plate. It was a well-thrown pitch that resulted in an unfortunate outcome for Schmidt, who was otherwise solid on the evening. He walked just two batters while striking out six and has now struck out six or more batters in seven of his 10 starts. Schmidt is scheduled to make his next start on Sunday against the Padres.

Clarke Schmidt matched a career-high with eight strikeouts over eight scoreless innings on Thursday in a win over the Twins.
Schmidt authored the strongest start of his career during Thursday afternoon’s matinee at Target Field, completing seven innings for the first time in his career, while also scattering three hits and needing just 103 pitches (69 strikes) to navigate eight nearly-flawless frames. He generated 16 swinging strikes, including 10 on his cutter alone, finishing with a robust 34 percent CSW. The 28-year-old righty has been a revelation this season for fantasy managers as a late-round steal in deeper mixed leagues. He’ll carry a sparkling 2.49 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 55/15 K/BB ratio across 50 2/3 innings (nine starts) into a home outing on Tuesday against the Mariners.

Clarke Schmidt outdueled Taj Bradley in Friday evening’s victory over the Rays, scattering five hits over 6 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball.
The 28-year-old hurler struck out six batters on the evening while walking a pair. The only real threat against him came in the fifth inning where he allowed a two-out single to Richie Palacios and walked Jose Caballero, but he punched out Alex Jackson to quell the uprising. Schmidt generated 14 swings and misses on 87 pitches in the game — five each on his sweeper and cutter — while posting a CSW of 34 percent. He’ll bring a stellar 2.95 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and a 47/15 K/BB ratio (42 2/3 innings) into Thursday’s showdown against the Twins in Minnesota.

Clarke Schmidt allowed three runs while striking out seven over five innings to get a win Saturday over the Tigers.
Schmidt allowed a leadoff homer to Riley Greene, and then the right-hander allowed a pair of runs in the fourth. In between — and an inning after — the right-hander was solid while giving up four hits and not issuing a walk. The overall result is just so-so, but Schmidt looked better than the line suggests. He’s back on the bump. He faces the Rays on Friday, and Schmidt will take a 3.50 ERA into that matchup.

Clarke Schmidt allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out five batters in 5 2/3 innings on Monday against the Orioles.
Besides a leadoff home run to Gunnar Henderson, Schmidt pitched well against a potent Baltimore offense. After the first inning when he allowed that home run and a single to Ryan O’Hearn, the 28-year-old hurler allowed just one hit in his final four innings. He now holds a solid 3.19 ERA, 1.39 WHIP with a 34/13 K/BB ratio in his six starts this season.

Clarke Schmidt was charged with three runs over 5 1/3 innings on Wednesday in a win over the Yankees.
Schmidt carried a shutout into the sixth inning before coughing up a three-run blast to Athletics slugger Brent Rooker, which accounted for all of the damage against him in this one. He struck out six and only issued a pair of walks. He’ll bring a solid 3.55 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 29/10 K/BB ratio across 25 1/3 innings (five starts) into a challenging road tilt on Monday against the upstart Orioles.

Clarke Schmidt pitched well in a no-decision against the Rays on Friday night, allowing just one run on seven hits across his 5 1/3 frames.
The right-hander racked up seven strikeouts on the night and didn’t allow a base on balls. The only damage done against him came on a solo homer off the bat of Richie Palacios in the sixth inning. Schmidt got 13 swings and misses on 102 pitches on the night — five on his sweeper — while posting an elite CSW of 36 percent. He’ll look to further improve upon his 3.15 ERA and 1.55 WHIP when he does battle against the Athletics at home on Wednesday.

Clarke Schmidt was charged with two runs (one earned) over five innings on Saturday in a win over the Guardians.
Schmidt drew the starting assignment for the opening contest of Saturday’s doubleheader at Progressive Field and was a bit all over the place, finishing with seven strikeouts, while also issuing five walks. He’ll bring a respectable 3.68 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 16/8 K/BB ratio across 14 2/3 innings (three starts) into a home outing on Friday against the division-rival Rays.
