Red Sox optioned C Daniel Butler to Triple-A Pawtucket; reassigned RHPs Dalier Hinojosa and John Ely and LHP Rich Hill to minor league camp.
The 26-year-old Butler, a career .259/.357/.417 hitter in the minors, was added to the 40-man roster in November. Boston signed Hinojosa, a Cuban defector, to a $4.25 million minor league contract in October. While he worked as a starter in Cuba, many scouts believe that he’ll be used out of the bullpen going forward. Ely will provide cheap pitching depth when he’s fully recovered from Tommy John surgery. Hill posted a 6.28 ERA with the Indians last year but struck out 51 over 38 2/3 innings; he should be one of the first relievers Boston summons for reinforcement this summer.
