The move makes room for Rafael Palmeiro on the roster. Cummings went 0-for-2 while with the Orioles.

He also stole his first base since 1999. Cummings is getting a lot of playing time at the moment, so AL-only leaguers may want to pick him up for the final week.

The Rays can’t give Jonny Gomes a chance because they might actually lose if he struggles. Cummings is probably a better choice than Simon as a DH against right-handers, but he has no real future in the organization. He probably won’t play too much once Carl Crawford is healthy.

Fortunately for Cummings, the Rays chose not to play someone in their future plans when the 32-year-old gave him a bunch of starts last month. That he played pretty well will increase his chances of landing a gig as a pinch-hitter next year.

Cummings could miss 4-6 weeks. The veteran outfielder was expected to begin the season at Triple-A Ottawa.

Cummings suffered a broken finger during spring training and just returned to Ottawa’s lineup. He might join Baltimore’s bench at some point.

Cummings gives the Orioles another left-handed bat while Rafael Palmeiro serves his suspension. No fantasy value.

Cummings, who was hitting .349/.427/.687 for Triple-A Durham, is back in the majors for the first time since 2001. He shouldn’t do anything other than pinch-hit, and it’s hard to imagine him getting many opportunities to do that. No fantasy value.

Cummings hit .285/.408/.556 for Triple-A Durham last season and also performed pretty well in 54 at-bats in the majors with Tampa Bay (.278/.361/.463). He should combine with Walter Young to give Triple-A Ottawa a nice one-two punch in the middle of the lineup.
