Achilles’ tendon intact for gimpy Jim Edmonds

Even if it’s only hanging by a thread. Jim Edmonds, who thought he had finally blew out his troublesome right Achilles’ tendon in a home run trot Tuesday, had tests come back negative today, leaving open the possibility that he could play again this season. “It didn’t blow out or tear,” he told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “So it’s not over yet.” Edmonds has been dealing with pain in the area for more than four months now, and while the prudent thing for any athlete in his situation to do would be to shut it down, he intends to keep doing what he can, in part since he’s planning to retire at season’s end anyway. Manager Dusty Baker gave no indication Wednesday of when he might try to work Edmonds back in. It might be that the 40-year-old first baseman-outfielder will be limited to pinch-hitting duties for now. Edmonds has started just two games since coming off the DL last week, but he’s 4-for-7 with two homers. Overall, he’s batting .276/.342/.504 in 246 at-bats this season.
