The Angels have signed reliever Ryan Mattheus to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, per a report from James Wagner of the Washington Post.
Mattheus, 31, had been in the Nationals’ organization since 2010. Over 142 1/3 innings in the majors, the right-hander compiled a 3.60 ERA with a 79/53 K/BB ratio. He was outrighted by the Nationals in November.
Mattheus broke his pitching hand in May 2013 due to punching a locker in frustration after allowing five runs to the Padres. He has struggled to find success on the mound ever since.
