Brandon Workman avoids surgery, but out indefinitely

Brandon Workman shows that not all visits to Dr. James Andrews result in surgery, as the Red Sox right-hander has been advised to rest and rehab his injured elbow rather than going under the knife.

Workman received a platelet-rich plasma injection as part of his treatment and manager John Farrell told Ian Browne of MLB.com “there’s no estimated time of a return to a throwing program.”

Officially the injury is being called a strained elbow and Workman is on the MLB disabled list rather than being optioned to Triple-A. He’s pitched 129 innings for the Red Sox since debuting as a 24-year-old in 2013, posting a 5.11 ERA and 117/51 K/BB ratio split between the rotation and bullpen.
