Jesus Guzman opted for free agency after being dropped from the 40-man roster by the Astros and now the 30-year-old first baseman/outfielder has signed with the Hiroshima Carp of the Japanese League.
Guzman came out of nowhere to have a strong rookie season with the Padres as a 27-year-old in 2011, but he’s hit just .226 with a .664 OPS in 315 games since then and batted .188 for the Astros this season.
According to the Japan Times he’ll get about $1 million plus potential incentives after making $1.3 million via arbitration this season.
