Mariners sign Carlos Quentin to minor league contract

Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that the Mariners have agreed to terms on a minor league contract with outfielder Carlos Quentin. He’ll head to Triple-A Tacoma initially, but Dutton thinks Quentin could be a “quick promotion candidate.”

Quentin was traded from the Padres to the Braves earlier this month in the Craig Kimbrel trade, but he was never in the Braves’ plans and they officially released him from their 40-man roster last week.

The 32-year-old hasn’t appeared in more than 100 games since 2011 and he batted just .177/.284/.315 in 50 games last season for San Diego.

If his health cooperates, Quentin might eventually see action at first base and left field in Seattle.
