The Nationals and Ian Desmond’s representatives discussed a contract extension in January, w hen the two sides agreed to a one-year, $3.8 million contract to avoid arbitration in the shortstop’s first year of eligibility. Via Adam Kilgore:

Publicly, in the past, Desmond and the Nationals have shared a view on a possible contract extension. They are open to the idea, but see no need for urgency. As Desmond said early in spring training: “I have no intention of going anywhere. I don’t think they have any intention of moving me. I don’t see what the urgency is.”

Desmond had a breakout season in 2012, posting a .292/.335/.511 slash line with 25 home runs, making him the best offensive shortstop in baseball last year.
