Weiner to replace Fehr as MLBPA executive director

Michael Weiner is the guy in that photo who isn’t David Ortiz and has been elected as the new executive director of the Players Association. He’ll take over the position when Donald Fehr steps down. Players voted 1,055-to-4 in favor of Weiner being the choice to replace Fehr, who will retire at some point before March 31, 2010. Fehr has been the MLBPA’s executive director since 1984, while Weiner has been with the organization since 1988 and staff counsel since 2004. “Michael has been at my side during all the battles we have fought over the last 20 years and has been a major part of our successes,” Fehr said. “He is clearly the most qualified person to become the next executive director and carry on the work of the Players Association in the years to come.” The current agreement between the players and owners expires on December 11, 2011, so Weiner figures to have a busy first year on the job.
