Antibiotics have had little effect. ''When you spend 10 days in bed shivering, you know there’s something wrong,’' said Borland, who pitched an inning on Wednesday.

He was 3-0 with five saves and a .096 ERA in 15 games in Class AAA, and will add depth to the Marlins’ bullpen. A.J Burnett was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Borland on the roster.

Borland has resumed long-tossing and lifting weights. He says he could return in three weeks, but that may be pushing it.

Borland, 36, had a 2.28 ERA in 34 appearances for Triple-A Albuquerque and a 5.40 ERA in 18 appeareances for the Marlins last season. Injuries could make him a midseason callup by the Cards.

Borland plans to return this season, although he’ll likely have to wait until after the All-Star break.

It’s rather surprising that the Marlins chose Borland over Tommy Phelps, who was with the team earlier this year and had pitched better at Albuquerque. Borland, 33, had a 5.27 ERA in 15 relief appearances for Florida last year. It’s unlikely that he’ll be any better this time around.

Borland should miss 2-3 weeks.
