A fond farewell for Mike Modano

I can think of no better way for the greatest American player in NHL history to end such a great career. After providing some incredible magic two nights ago in Dallas, Modano went back to the place where his career began: Minnesota.

The fans there were just as warm, receptive and uplifted as the Stars fans on Thursday night, and Modano became visibly emotional early in the game when the fans gave him another lengthy ovation.

Modano has yet to announce his intentions, but the stars are aligning for a glorious sendoff. There has been no better farewell for such a great player, and after tonight there is a sense of finality to a great career.

The Stars would win in the shootout when Jamie Benn -- who is poised to take over as the Stars’ face of the franchise -- snapped a wicked shot past Niklas Backstrom. Yet the highlight of the night, for Stars and Wild fans alike, was when the first star of the game was announced...
