1968 Olympic champion sprinter gets doping ban

Lee Evans

Double 1968 Olympic champion Lee Evans received a four-year ban from coaching by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for giving a youth athlete performance-enhancing drugs.

Evans, 67, and another coach gave the athlete substances that “may have been responsible” for a failed drug test, according to AFN. Evans was working as a consultant to the Lagos State Government.

The other coach was banned for life after taking the athlete to a doctor who injected her with an unknown substance though she was not sick. She said she collapsed after the injection.

Evans led a U.S. sweep of the 400m at the Mexico City 1968 Olympics in a world record 43.86 seconds. He also anchored the gold-medal-winning 4x400m relay team that won in world record time.
