O’Hara, Team USA targeting historic first in women’s soccer

There’s no doubting Kelley O’Hara’s nature. Anyone who’s seen the U.S. women’s national team member for club or country has seen a fiery competitor who’s as happy getting stuck into a tackle as scoring a goal.

She’s had more than a few of the latter, netting a critical goal in the semifinals of the 2015 World Cup, and won’t hesitate to execute the latter as Team USA begins its quest for a fifth Olympic gold on Wednesday at 6 p.m. EDT against New Zealand.

O’Hara, 27, has history on her mind, a powerful motivator, and discussed Team USA’s quest to achieve that goal in a lengthy and optimistic talk with ProSoccerTalk’s Joe Prince-Wright.

From ProSoccerTalk:

“Extremely hopeful,” O’Hara said, energetically. “Everyone’s goal is always to win the gold medal and no women’s soccer team has ever won a World Cup and then won an Olympic gold medal so we all want to be the first team to do that.”

No men’s team has gone back-to-back at an Olympics or World Cup since 1936 (Italy), although that’s quite different since the composition of men’s teams for the Olympics is different from full national teams.

O’Hara also discusses ticket tape parades, big goals, and much more with PST. Read the whole thing here.
