Costa, 28, has scored nine goals in 11 Premier League games this season but ahead of Spain’s World Cup qualifier against Macedonia he failed to recover from a thigh injury in training.
The former Atletico Madrid star will also miss Spain’s friendly against England at Wembley next week, as he focuses on being fit for a tough stretch of games coming up for Antonio Conte’s side.
Chelsea, who sit second in the table on 25 points and just one point behind leaders Liverpool, face Middlesbrough, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City in the coming weeks.
Having Costa fit and raring to go is key to Conte’s plans with the Brazilian born forward looks like his old self this season as he terrorizes opposition defenses with his mixture of pace, guile and clinical finishing.
Without Costa, Chelsea’s forward options are limited with Michy Batshuayi and Dominic Solanke the only other recognized strikers currently fit and available.
