MLS Player of the Week — Week 5

Harrison Shipp

Harrison Shipp, Chicago Fire — Abel Arciniega/ Chicago Fire

Here’s the thing: barely anyone stood out as the overwhelming star of Week 5. Only two players (Harrison Shipp and Benny Feilhaber) tallied a multi-goal or multi-assist performance this weekend, and Feilhaber dropped his dimes via corner kicks after being largely ineffective and invisible all game long.

Shipp deserves more recognition, but playing on a pretty bad Chicago Fire team, he’s not likely to receive near as much as he deserves. They simply won’t win enough for Shipp’s name to come up in Player of the Week and Team of the Week discussions unless you’re watching every game extremely close.

So this week’s MLS Player of the Week is Chicago Fire midfielder Harry Shipp. Shipp’s two assists included the lay-off for Jeff Larentowicz’s game-winning goal (RECAP) and the cross to set up Shaun Maloney’s first goal for the Fire.

It’s understandable if you’re not watching the Fire every week, but Shipp continues to be worth the price of admission (or the time it takes to open up MLS Live) game in and game out. A call-up to the U.S. national team is in order for Ship as well.
