Days after criticizing his teammates for occupying his preferred places on the pitch -- “I think that’s a shame,” he said -- Manchester United star Robin van Persie is supporting his embattled manager while using a harsh adjective to describe the players on the pitch.
Van Persie was discussing United’s standing in Europe after a 2-0 loss at Olympiacos in the first leg of the clubs’ UEFA Champions League Round of 16 pairing.
If anyone’s allowed to talk, it’s the productive van Persie. Since returning from injury on Jan. 28, the 30-year-old striker has scored four goals in five Premier League matches as the Red Devils posted a 2W-2D-1L record.
The Dutchman’s support for under-fire manager David Moyes went a little something like this:“He is new and needs time. He’s working hard and so are we,” van Persie is quoted by The Sun.
“It’s easy to point at the manager but that’s not who I am. We need to do it on the pitch.”
It’s not the strongest of supportive messages, but it’s something. Saying “That’s not who I am” reads like more of an “I’m better than that” than a “This guy rules,” doesn’t it?
