Arrest made in FIU player’s murder

Less than 24 hours after an altercation left a Florida International player dead, police have arrested a man fin the slaying, the Miami Herald is reporting.

According to the Herald, former FIU player Quentin Wyche surrendered to police late Friday night and was charged with second-degree murder in connection to the stabbing death of FIU running back Kendall Berry.

Wyche had allegedly had allegedly insulted Berry’s girlfriend and threw cookies in her face, leading to a confrontation between the two in front of an on-campus rec center. The confrontation ended with Berry lying on the ground, bleeding to death as witnesses attempted to resuscitate the player before medical personnel arrived.

The 22-year-old Wyche fled the scene, and Berry was pronounced dead in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

“Kendall had an infectious personality; he was loved and respected by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him,” FIU football coach Mario Cristobal said in a statement. :It was truly an honor to have known and coached Kendall. It’s a shame to lose such a young life to an act of senseless violence.”

In the wake of Berry’s tragic death, spring practice has been suspended indefinitely, and it’s uncertain whether the spring game scheduled for Wednesday will go off as planned.
