Bruins’ defensive MVP undergoes surgery, ‘questionable’ for bowl

When Illinois and UCLA take the field for the Interim Coach Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl the last day of this month, the latter could do so without one of their top defensive players in 2011.

Or they should have him. One of the two, definitely.

Bruins’ interim head coach Mike Johnson confirmed Tuesday that linebacker Patrick Larimore underwent surgery earlier that morning to repair an injured thumb. From Johnson’s comments, however, it doesn’t appear, at least at this point in time, that Larimore’s availability for the Dec. 31 game will be impacted much if at all.

“He’s not out. They may put a cast on it and deal with,” Johnson said. “I think he’s going to try and come back and play. Something similar to what he had before. It took him 10 days, but he will be okay and we will see how he feels when he comes back. He’s questionable right now.”

Larimore has started all 13 games for the Bruins and led the team in tackles. For his performance, the redshirt junior was named the team’s defensive MVP.
