Timing is key, even in the offseason. Georgia Tech was forced to report a minor violation to the NCAA after head coach Paul Johnson commented publicly on the addition of an incoming graduate transfer. Johnson’s comments occurred approximately 30 minutes before the player actually was confirmed to have joined the program. Tisk, tisk.
“Some of that stuff is ridiculous,” Johnson said of the situation to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It certainly isn’t gaining an advantage over anybody.”
In the grand scheme of things, this is about as minor a violation as you can find, so do not expect much to come out of this for Johnson and Georgia Tech. Certainly, no eligibility is at risk, nor will the reduction of scholarships or practice time. Johnson claimed the transfer had been made official at the time he was asked about the transfer in an interview, which sparked the illegal comment.
The graduate transfer joining Georgia Tech was Patrick Skov, a fullback from Stanford. Skov announced his decision to transfer and join Georgia Tech in April.
