Initial reports indicated that Georgia Tech backup quarterback Jaybo Shaw would be out 6-8 weeks with a broken collarbone in his right shoulder.
Now, however, head coach Paul Johnson expects Shaw to return in no more than six weeks. In fact, Johnson said there’s a chance Shaw could return for the Miami (FL) game, which is a little over four weeks.
“If [current backup Tevin Washington] plays, he plays. If he doesn’t play in the first couple games, the other guy [Shaw] will be back by the third game,” Johnson said. “You don’t worry about it that much. You just play.
While the third-game scenario may be a bit too optimistic, there’s little doubt that the timeline for a return will be sooner than originally anticipated.
And that would be an important development because even as he’s behind starter Josh Nesbitt on the depth chart, Shaw played an important role in the Yellow Jackets’ offense last season, and that specialized role was expected to increase this season.
