NCAA All A Twitter Over Kiffin Tweet

Twitter, the “greatest technological advancement of the 21st century” -- which I believe is Latin for “greatest bane of 21st century society” -- has become the latest burr in the backside of America’s favorite lightning rod for controversy, Lane Kiffin. As first reported by ESPN.com, and later confirmed by the Knoxville News Sentinel, Tennessee will self-report yet another secondary recruiting violation to the NCAA following a Twitter posting earlier this week.On Monday, the Twitter account of the Tennessee head coach featured the following posting: “It’s a beautiful day in Knoxville, Tennessee today. I was so exited [sic] to hear that J.C. Copeland committed to play for the Vols today!"Mentioning potential recruits by name is a violation of NCAA standards.Kiffin himself, however, was not responsible for the posting. The News Sentinel reports that the post was made by a newly hired assistant to Kiffin who didn’t consult UT’s compliance office before making the post."You cannot post that type of stuff, obviously,” UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said. “It was an honest, inadvertent mistake."This is at least the third time the university has been forced to self-report recruiting violations to the NCAA since Kiffin was named as head coach last December.
