Ole Miss still doing their research on Masoli

These days, what would a morning be without a Masoli-to-Rebels? A vast pit of emptiness, that’s what it’d be.

The latest news trickling out of Oxford regarding the possible addition of Jeremiah Masoli to the Ole Miss football program is that the Rebels continue their pursuit of the former Oregon quarterback but have yet to bring him into the fold -- the key word there being “yet” as the SEC school still appears to be the frontrunner to land Masoli.

Speaking to the David Brandt of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, athletic director Pete Boone, one of the key decision makers who would ultimately have to give the thumbs-up to bringing Masoli in, said “we’re discussing several different issues” but refused to get into any detail for fear of bending NCAA rules.

Boone, who participated in a day of meetings with head coach Houston Nutt Tuesday, added that they would like to wrap this up as quickly as possible, but there is still a process they’re following in looking into and through all of the baggage Masoli would carry with him.

“In athletics, we always want to get things done quickly,” Boone said. “But we have to do our research.”

The Clarion-Ledger’s Brandt also writes in a separate blog posting that “a consensus has been built that Masoli is worth pursuing.”

While that sentiment is debatable, there’s almost no debating that, come September, it would be a more-than-mild surprise if Masoli wasn’t standing on the sidelines -- or under center -- for the Rebels.
