On second thought, Todd Gurley will start for Georgia after all

Last night we ran a post stating that Georgia running back Todd Gurley would definitely return to action this week, but that Mark Richt wasn’t sure whether or not his one-time Heisman Trophy favorite would start.

“We haven’t even talked about that yet,” Richt said yesterday. “Obviously, both those guys will play and we’ll see how Sony is doing. I think he came out of the game pretty good, too. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more than just Nick and Todd in the ballgame at that running back position. Early in the year we did a good job of giving guys reps and hopefully we can continue to do that.”

Well, they’ve talked about it, and the Georgia coaches have a pretty good idea what they’ll do with Gurley when AP No. 9 Auburn visits No. 16 Georgia on Saturday night.

Mark Richt on radio show: “First offensive play you’ll see Gurley. I’ll tell you that.”

And just for emphasis, Richt adds: “Todd Gurley is the starting tailback at Georgia.” — Seth Emerson (@SethEmerson) November 11, 2014

Whether its Gurley, freshman phenom Nick Chubb or the recently-returned Sony Michel, the Bulldogs should run early and often against Auburn. The Bulldogs rank 15th nationally in rushing, hitting 305 yards in last week’s 63-31 defeat of Kentucky and rushing for at least 207 yards in every game except that inexplicable Florida loss. Auburn, meanwhile, has allowed 4.87 yards per carry or more in three of its last four outings.

The Bulldogs and Tigers will do battle at 7:15 p.m. ET.
