Following their first win of the 2010 season, the celebration in Purdue’s locker room was somewhat muted by the fact that leading receiver Keith Smith had suffered an injury during the game.
Apparently, there was good reason for his teammates to be somber.
Head coach Danny Hope said Sunday that the knee injury Smith suffered in the fourth quarter against Western Illinois appears to be a serious one. Hope did not say how long Smith may be out or if it was a season-ending injury.
Following the game, Hope seemed to indicate that the injury was indeed serious.
“The medical people will do their examinations and let us know the official results,” Hope said. “Normally when they get hurt on the other sideline and they take them into the locker room and don’t bring them back to our sideline, that’s not a good sign.”
Tests conducted over the next couple of days will determine the extent of the injury.
Smith’s 18 receptions in less than two games tops the Boilermakers by a wide margin, and he’s tied for fourth in the nation in receptions per game.
