While there’s no official word yet from Cal, it appears that the season, and thus the career, of Kevin Riley has in all likelihood come to an end.
The senior quarterback suffered what looked to be a significant injury to his left knee in the first quarter of the Golden Bears’ loss to Oregon State Saturday. After a trip to the locker room, Riley spent the remainder of the afternoon on crutches and wearing a heavy brace on the knee.
Head coach Jeff Tedford acknowledged after the game that the injury was more than just a minor ding, but stopped short of saying that Riley was done for the season.
“Right now, it looks a little bit more serious than just your everyday sprained knee,” the coach said.
“He was in a lot of pain. He came off the field with tears in his eyes, and I’m sure that has a lot to do with his disappointment. He felt like it was pretty significant. Kevin is a tough guy. It’s unfortunate.”
Riley will undergo an MRI as early as today to determine the extent of the damage.
If Riley is indeed sideline for the duration, Brock Mansion will take over for the remainder of the year. After stepping in for Riley yesterday, the junior completed 14-of-24 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.
