MLB DFS Pitchers: Thursday 5/13 Early Slate

Corbin Burnes

Corbin Burnes

John Hefti-USA TODAY Sports

Corbin Burnes - Milwaukee Brewers (vs. St. Louis Cardinals)

After testing positive for CO-VID 19, Corbin Burnes returns against a St. Louis team that he faced on April 8th. He totaled 30.3 Draftkings points at a salary of $9,400. Since that start, Burnes has been extremely solid averaging 29.1 DK points per game. His strikeout numbers are massive with 49 total K’s over 29.1 innings pitched. While his salary has risen, if you are able to roster him, I would confidently do so.

Jack Flaherty - St. Louis Cardinals (vs. Milwaukee Brewers)

Jack Flaherty has looked great so far. He has reached at least 24.7 fantasy points in each of his last three games and has yet to face the Brewers this season. Flaherty is leading the majors with six wins on the year. The Brewers are batting just .205 against opposing right-handed pitchers over 953 at-bats. Over these at-bats, Milwaukee has struck out 285 times. Flaherty is a fine play for this early slate, but once again you’re going to need the salary. If you can find two cheap stacks for this 12:20 PM ET early slate, investing in the two top-end pitchers would be a solid strategy. You know me, always down for a game-stack, whether it’s for batters or pitchers.

Lance Lynn - Chicago White Sox (vs. Minnesota Twins)

The Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins were able to produce tons of fantasy points last night but what do we have in store for today? Lance Lynn faces a Minnesota Twins team that exhibits extremely similar splits towards left-handed and right-handed batters. The Twins own a .314 batting average in 35 prior at-bats against Lynn, Minnesota’s starter has averaged 25.3 DKP over his last five games and carries a massive ceiling of 48.3 points (which he showed against the Kansas City Royals on April 8th). With that said, his floor is lower than the other two elite options in Flaherty and Burnes. All three elite pitchers are viable plays, Lynn coming in third is a clear distinction though.[[ad:athena]]

Zach Eflin - Philadelphia Phillies (vs. Washington Nationals)

Zach Eflin is facing a Washington Nationals team that just has not been hitting as of late. Eflin has been pitching well but his ceiling is nowhere near the starting pitchers directly above him. Eflin has scored 27.4 points, 17.5 points, 15.6 points, 13.3 points, and 24.2 points, over his last five games. For cash and GPP purposes, Eflin becomes a viable DFS play who should hit double digits fantasy points again, against a struggling Washington Nationals team.

Charlie Morton - Atlanta Braves (vs. Toronto Blue Jays)

Charlie Morton becomes the risky play of the slate and in his last start, he only lasted .2 innings allowing four hits, six runs but none of them were earned. Normally after a game like that, you would expect a player to be eager to get back on the horse and perform well. And that’s exactly what I expect him to do. His last really great game was against the Yankees on April 20th. Morton is due for a bounce-back game and that’s what I expect to get out of him today. Morton has allowed a .294 batting average in 68 at-bats against Toronto, striking out 15 batters along the way. Marcus Siemen has a .357 batting average in 14 at-bats with two doubles against Morton.

Michael Pineda - Minnesota Twins (vs. Chicago White Sox)

Michael Pineda is facing the Chicago White Sox. Pineda Has been impressive this season aside from one poor start against the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 24th. Pineda totaled 15.3 Draftkings points against the Rangers, 20.3 points against the Royals, and 26.0 points against Boston. These are impressive numbers against good teams. The Chicago White Sox have struggled against opposing righties batting just .247 with 239 strikeouts over 893 at-bats this season They are clearly a team that hits better ask against opposing lefties as they’re batting .315 with eight home runs in 241 at-bats against left-handed pitchers this season. The White Sox have the highest team batting average and ranks 24th lowest in the league with just 297 strikeouts. Performing against the White Sox will not be easy but I do think it’s worth the risk for Pineda’s low salary of $7,000 on Draftkings.
