PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Patrick Reed is liking South Florida.

With a 3-under-par 67 Thursday, he’s in early contention at the Honda Classic. Reed will head to Doral next week to defend his title at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. He’s tied for third at PGA National’s Champions Course, two shots off the lead.

Reed played through the toughest conditions in the afternoon, when scores were more than a stroke higher on average.

“It was hard to get it really close,” Reed said. “You could play it to the fat part of greens, but even when you hit it to 7 or 8 feet, you had to see which way the wind was going, even on putts. Just makes it a little more difficult.”

Reed got off to a hot start, shooting 31 on the front nine, but struggled in the middle of his round before finishing off with birdies on two of the last three holes.

“Gives me good confidence going into tomorrow,” Reed said.
