WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. – Here’s everything You Oughta Know entering the final round of The Greenbrier Classic:
• Billy Hurley III leads by two strokes in search of his first career PGA Tour victory. In fact, it would be just his third win as a professional, as his only previous triumphs came in 2006 on the eGolf Professional Tour and 2010 on the NGA Hooters Tour.
• Hurley owns sole possession of the 54-hole lead for the first time, but don’t expect him to fade on Sunday. His final-round scoring average this season is 70.00, good enough for a respectable ranking of 24th on the PGA Tour.
• Hurley enters the final round at 12 under for the week. He is 2 over on the par-3 holes, 12 under on the par 4s and 2 under on the par 5s.
• Here’s how to gain a 54-hole lead: Hurley is tied for second this week with 15 birdies and tied for first in fewest bogeys with just three.
• Angel Cabrera trails by two strokes entering the final round. His only previous two PGA Tour victories have come at major championships – the 2007 U.S. Open and 2009 Masters Tournament.
• Cabrera is, however, no stranger to claiming a trophy. He owns 51 career professional titles around the globe.
• In 16 starts this season, Cabrera has recorded one top 25 (T-24 at the Quicken Loans National). Coming into this week, he was ranked 157th in the FedEx Cup standings.
• The top 10 players on the leaderboard have combined for 22 career PGA Tour wins, though the balance is skewed. Steve Stricker (T-4) owns 12 of them, followed by four from Joe Durant, three from Camilo Villegas, two from Cabrera and one from Michael Thompson. Hurley, Kevin Chappell, Cameron Tringale, Will Wilcox and Chris Stroud are all seeking their maiden victories.
• If any of the aforementioned players wins Sunday, he would become the 10th first-time winner on the PGA Tour this season. The last one was Hideki Matsuyama at last month’s Memorial Tournament.
