Couples With big Sunday who knows

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Fred Couples dug himself a hole Saturday at the Masters but wasn’t running a white flag up on his bid to become the oldest winner of a major championship.

With a double-bogey 7 at the eighth hole, Couples still shot 72.

‘Comedy of errors,’ Couples said of his play at No. 8. ‘I wish I hadn’t made that score there, I might have played more aggressively from there on.’

When Couples, 51, left the media bullpen behind the 18th green, he was six shots back.

“With a great round tomorrow, who knows,” Couples said.

Couples said his ailing back is getting worse despite the injections intended to help this week.

“I think it’s wearing off,” Couples said. “It’s supposed to last two weeks, but I’m pretty sore. I think when this [Masters’ run] all melts away, I’ll be in big trouble.”
