A winner of the U.S. Amateur last year in dramatic fashion, 22-year-old Steven Fox turned professional Friday, according to a PGA Tour report.
A three-time all-conference selection while at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, Fox completed a remarkable comeback last summer at Cherry Hills Golf Club, defeating Michael Weaver on the first extra hole to claim the Havemeyer Trophy despite starting the 64-man match play session as the No. 63 seed.
In defense of his title, Fox shot rounds of 72 and 74 earlier this month at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., failing to advance to the match play portion of the event by two strokes.
Since his breakthrough victory, Fox has struggled in limited action as an amateur on the PGA Tour, missing the cut in each of his nine starts in 2013, including each of the season’s first three majors. He has broken 70 just once in 18 competitive rounds, a second-round 69 at the Crowne Plaza Invitational where his even-par 140 total left him one shot short of playing the weekend.
