Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that Brian Cashman and the Yankees are finalizing a five-year, $25 million contract extension.
Cashman currently make $3 million a year and is entering the final year of a three-year deal. He has been the Yankees general manager since 1998. He’s been with the Yankees organization since joining as a college intern in 1986 and has never worked for another organization.
Cashman took over the top spot in the Yankees front office in the midst of a dynasty he helped his predecessors, Gene Michael and Bob Watson, build. He has five World Series rings himself and, since becoming GM, the Yankees have won four World Series titles. They came within one game of the World Series this past season, despite the fact that the club has undergone a fairly substantial rebuild in recent seasons during which the legends of the past dynasty retired and the farm system has been replenished, to where it now stands as perhaps the top system in the game.
Hal Steinbrenner is clearly comfortable winning with Cashman and, with this extension, he’s showing how pleased has has been with Cashman’s rebuild. When it’s all said and done, Cashman is likely to be the first general manager to spend his entire career with one team in decades.
