Tigers starter David Price left his start against the Royals in the seventh inning on Friday after he stepped on a bat while backing up home plate after an Alex Gordon single. MLB.com’s Jason Beck explains how it happened:
Price left the start having allowed five runs (four earned) on 13 hits and no walks while recording only one strikeout. After the game, manager Brad Ausmus said the injury had something to do with the hamstring, per Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press. Ausmus added that he was less concerned with the injury after the game than during the game. “Any injury is concerning,” Ausmus said. “Especially when you talk about the ace of your staff.”
Plate umpire Alan Porter tossed Gordon’s bat out of the home-plate area to avoid any potential contact with Hosmer. At nearly the same time, Price was running to back up home and ended up where the bat landed. Replays showed Price stepped on the bat with his right foot, which then rolled with the bat behind him.
Price immediately hopped around in pain. He threw a few warmup pitches to test his leg, but he was in considerable discomfort, hunching over on the back of the mound. He left the game but stayed on the dugout bench, keeping weight off his right foot.

Price will undergo further evaluation on Saturday which should provide some clarity as to whether or not the left-hander will miss any starts or go on the disabled list.
