MLB’s home run leader, Jose Abreu, was placed on the disabled list over the weekend with posterior tibia tendinitis in his left ankle, but it sounds like he might not have to miss much time.
Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com reports that an MRI today revealed only inflammation and no structural damage in Abreu’s ankle. He’ll wear a boot over the next several days before being re-evaluated at some point during the team’s upcoming homestand, which begins Thursday. The hope is that he’ll be ready to return as soon as he’s eligible, but the White Sox won’t rush their new slugger back.
Abreu, who signed a six-year, $68 million contract with the White Sox last October, leads the majors with 15 home runs and the American League with 42 RBI. Paul Konerko and Adam Dunn will attempt to fill the void at first base for now.
