Making official what was expected, the Marlins announced that Giancarlo Stanton will not play again this season after being hit in the face by a pitch last week.
As of yesterday Stanton was hoping to return and the team--or at the very least manager Mike Redmond--were keeping an open mind in case he made tremendous progress in his recovery from facial fractures and dental damage.
Stanton, who hit .288 with a league-leading 37 homers and a league-leading .950 OPS before the injury, will end up missing the final 17 games of the season.
