The Pirates announced tonight that they acquired infielder Jason Rogers from the Brewers in exchange for outfielder Keon Broxton and right-hander Trey Supak.
Rogers, 27, hit .296 with four home runs and an .808 OPS in 169 plate appearances with the Brewers this past season and owns a .286/.358/.429 batting line in the minors. He could be a potential first base option for the Pirates, though he also has experience between third base and the outfield. Of course, the Brewers having an opening at first base as well, so Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel speculates that this could be setting things up for another move. Pedro Alvarez, who was recently non-tendered by the Pirates, has been mentioned as one possibility.
Broxton, a speedy center fielder, batted .273/.357/.438 with 10 home runs and 35 stolen bases over 133 games between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis this past season. The 25-year-old appeared in seven games with the Pirates down the stretch. He was blocked in Pittsburgh’s outfield, but there’s opportunity in Milwaukee.
Supak, a second-round pick from 2014, owns a 5.85 ERA and 44/16 K/BB ratio over his first 52 1/3 innings as a professional and has yet to pitch above rookie ball. He’ll be 20 years old next May.
