Red Sox showing interest in free agent Matt Guerrier

A major league source has informed Alex Speier of Boston-based WEEI.com that the Red Sox are showing interest in free agent reliever Matt Guerrier.

And why wouldn’t they?

Guerrier posted a 3.17 ERA and 1.10 WHIP over 71 innings this past season and a 2.36 ERA and 0.97 WHIP the year before.

He has a far better track record of success than setup man Jacquin Benoit, who inked a three-year, $16.5 million contract with the Tigers earlier this month.

Guerrier would have been a Type A free agent this winter, but the Twins declined to offer him arbitration. In other words, he won’t cost the team that signs him a draft pick. The righty earned $3.15 million in 2010 and will be looking for a raise in the form of a contract much like Benoit’s.
