On Thursday evening, the Rays acquired catcher Erik Kratz from the Giants in exchange for a player to be named later.
Kratz, 38, was designated for assignment by the Giants on Monday. He hit a lackluster .125/.222/.281 in 36 plate appearances backing up Buster Posey.
Kratz will serve as catching depth in Tampa Bay, something the first-place Rays desperately need right now with Mike Zunino, Michael Perez, and Anthony Bemboom banged up.
