That was quick.
Two days after calling up the venerable (query: can you be “venerable” if you’re simply old, or do you have to be good and old?) Alan Embree was designated for assignment by the Red Sox in order to make room for Daisuke Matsuzaka.
Embree did not appear in a game. He had a 3.68 ERA in 7 1/3 innings for the Pawtucket before his call-up, but given the presence of Scott Schoeneweis -- who has a 3.72 ERA with eight strikeouts in 9.2 innings pitched this season -- Embree didn’t appear to have a role.
Dude’s a lefty, and lefties are harder to defeat than the zombie apocalypse, so it wouldn’t shock me if someone else took a chance on him before the season is out.
