Wally Backman resigned because he wants to manage/coach in the major leagues

Wally Backman, the former manager of the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas, released a statement on Tuesday explaining why he chose to resign. Via ESPN’s Adam Rubin:

Backman says he “didn’t see a future at the major league level with the Mets.” He added, “My ultimate goal is to manage in the big leagues or to be hired in a major league coaching position...”

Though Backman is not known for holding back anything he’s feeling, his statement was pretty straightforward. He didn’t take any shots at the Mets organization or express any sour feelings about his lack of major league opportunities.

As Craig mentioned on Monday, Backman started out managing in the independent leagues and the low levels of the minors before rising to manage a Triple-A team. That looks quite good on a resume for a team looking to hire a new manager, especially an organization that feels a kick in the pants is just what it needs.
