MIAMI, FL - APRIL 28: Center Tyson Chandler #6 of the New York Knicks reacts against the Miami Heat in Game One of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals in the 2012 NBA Playoffs on April 28, 2012 at the American Airines Arena in Miami, Florida. Tyson Chandler was considered one of the front runners for Defensive Player of the Year (he would have had my vote), so this tweet from Marc Spears of Yahoo comes as no surprise.

Knicks center Tyson Chandler to be named NBA Defensive Player of the Year tomorrow at team practice facility, source tells YahooSports.

No reason to doubt this is true.

Chandler was the anchor of what became a good defense in New York (even under Mike D’Antoni this season). His ability to control the paint and block or alter shots, covering for sins on the perimeter, let the Knicks get away with playing some questionable defensive lineups. Like any time Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire were paired.

Chandler was the MVP of the Knicks this season and they don’t even make the playoffs without him. He deserves this award.

Expect Kevin Garnett, Dwight Howard and LeBron James to draw votes and be in the top 5, but Chandler deserves it this year.
