This Sunday, three Premier League matches occurred: Aston Villa v. Hull City, Tottenham Hotspur v. Liverpool and Leicester City v. Arsenal.
Aston Villa’s 2-1 victory over Hull City now has them sitting pretty in third place, with Swansea City ahead of them in second place and Chelsea in the first-place position. Villa managed the majority of possession, 51 percent, but in the end, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first half (goals from Andreas Weimann and Gabriel Agbonlahor) put the Lions in an ideal situation to hold onto the win. Nikica Jelavic’s 74th minute score couldn’t inject enough momentum in his squad to preserve the draw.
Liverpool enjoyed a great day, defeating Tottenham, possible top-of-the-table foes, 3-0 on an early Raheem Sterling goal, a Steven Gerrard penalty kick and Alberto Moreno’s wonderful run and finish. It wasn’t the same type of domination that fans witnessed last season when the Reds hit the road to Merseyside; nonetheless, Brendan Rodgers should be very satisfied with the result from both an attacking and defensive perspective.
Leicester City surprisingly snagged a point against Arsenal, tying the Gunners 1-1. Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal’s biggest acquisition of the summer from La Liga powerhouse Barcelona, burying Yaya Sanogo’s rebounded shot in the 20th minute. Two minutes later, Leonardo Ulla quickly knotted the score on a headed effort off Jeff Schlupp’s cross. Arsenal is sitting at seventh place, not where they would likely to stand, as they certainly believed they could’ve muster a few points out of this match. The Foxes will hope to stay above relegation.
