An explosive game saw Tottenham take advantage of visiting defensive mistakes as Spurs held serve at home, downing leaders Manchester City 2-0 at White Hart Lane.
City really should have gone in front inside the opening five minutes as a cross from Jesus Navas down the right came right to the feet of David Silva, but the streaking Spaniard whiffed with the goal gaping.
Instead, Spurs would take the early lead on a ninth-minute Aleksandar Kolarov own-goal. Danny Rose sent in a cross from the left, and while it evaded the head of Heung-Min Son, Kolarov whiffed his right-footed clear, with the ball instead striking his trailing foot and deflecting into the top corner.

Dele Alli coerced an early yellow on Nicolas Otamendi with some nice moves at the top of the box on 20 minutes. Christian Eriksen came agonizingly close to a second on the ensuing free-kick, but fired just barely wide. There was a vigorous penalty shout from the visiting fans on 23 minutes as Sergio Aguero was felled by Jan Vertonghen in the box, but the referee was unmoved by the protests.
Spurs would double the lead on 37 minutes through Dele Alli. His first effort from the top of the box was weak and blocked, but the ball fell to Son who then fed Alli who had slipped through the defensive line unmarked, and the English international was there to push the ball into the back of the net.

In the second half, the game remained open. Sergio Aguero had an early effort on 50 minutes but Hugo Lloris was there to save it off the post.

Spurs defended well and looked to hit on the counter already with a two-goal lead, and they’d earn the chance for a third just past the hour mark. Kyle Walker was clattered above the box, and while the referee played advantage there with the ball falling to the feet of Alli, but he was crunched in the box by Kelechi Iheanacho and a penalty was given. Erik Lamela stepped up to take it, but Claudio Bravo acrobatically saved the kick to the bottom right corner.
City had a shot to pull one back with 10 minutes to go as Silva fed Aguero, and the Argentinian’s shot was deflected towards the top corner, but Lloris made a wonderful snap save to keep the clean sheet.

The three points for Tottenham brings them to 17 points on the year, just one back of City at the top of the table. It also leaves Spurs as the only unbeaten team remaining in Premier League play. City remains top on 18 points, with Spurs and Liverpool nipping at their heels.
