Meineke Car Care bowl to have name changed to Belk Bowl in ’11

It’s official: South Florida and Clemson will face off in the final Meineke Car Care Bowl (sorry, George Foreman). Starting next season, the game will officially be known as the Belk Bowl (????), named after the regional department store whose headquarters lie in Charlotte.

Because, you know, the old name just wasn’t bad enough.

“With our new branding campaign, we think it’s a great fit,” said Belk chairman and CEO Tim Belk. “College football is a big part of the Southern lifestyle and a big part of our (16-state) footprint and our commitment to community involvement.”

According to the Charlotte Observer, the sponsorship will have a three-year run and continue to pair the teams Big East and the ACC. Chairman of Charlotte Collegiate Football Johnny Harris stated that the main goal of the Belk Bowl is to become a more prominent event in the college football post season.

“No one wants this to be a second-tier bowl,” Harris said.

With a name like the Belk Bowl? Yeah, good luck with that.
