  • NYY Starting Pitcher #0
Marcus Stroman held the Twins scoreless across six innings on Wednesday earning the win. He allowed two hits, walked three, and struck out two.
Stroman wasn’t particularly sharp in this one with just two strikeouts and three walks. The Twins also had 10 hard hit balls, seven of which were hit in the air, but they couldn’t sustain any type of rally. But that’s what happens when the Yankees play the Twins, with a 119-43 record in their last 162 games against Minnesota.
  • ARI Center Fielder #15
Randal Grichuk came up a single shy of a cycle Tuesday as the Diamondbacks defeated the Angels 9-4.
Grichuk got through the hard part in his first three at-bats, leaving him with two chances to complete the cycle. Alas, he walked in the sixth and then flew out to the warning track in left in the seventh. The big game upped Grichuk’s line to .316/.367/.480 in 109 plate appearances. Still, the Diamondbacks have very rarely used him versus righties, even with Alek Thomas out for months. The Diamondbacks are about to face five righties in a row now, so we’ll see if that changes at all.
  • ARI Starting Pitcher #52
Jordan Montgomery allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings Tuesday in a defeat of the Angels.
Montgomery hasn’t done much after signing late, but he was able to take down one of the teams that snubbed him in free agency to even his record at 4-4. He’ll bring a 6.58 ERA into his next start against the White Sox on Sunday. Perhaps he’ll take advantage of another weak lineup then.
  • LAA Starting Pitcher #54
Making his first start of the year, José Suarez took a loss after allowing four runs in 2 2/3 innings Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.
Suarez didn’t exactly earn this assignment with his 6.54 ERA in 16 relief appearances, but the Angels didn’t have anyone they wanted to call up. Suarez could return to the pen now with Chase Silseth expected back.
  • ARI Catcher #14
Gabriel Moreno finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI against the Angels on Tuesday.
Both doubles left his bat at 106 mph. The second, hit 407 feet to center, would have been a homer in 18 ballparks. Moreno has been quite a disappointment this season, and it seems unlikely that he’ll wind up building on last year’s modest power numbers. Still, he should easily better his current .240 average the rest of the way.
  • ARI Center Fielder #7
Corbin Carroll went 3-for-4 with a triple, a double and a walk versus the Angels on Tuesday.
Carroll has nine hits, four walks and zero strikeouts in his last five games, boosting his OBP from .278 to .300. He’s still a long way from where he needs to be, but things are getting better.
  • LAD Catcher #16
Will Smith went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and a walk Tuesday as the Dodgers crushed the Rangers 14-2.
Smith started the game off right, hitting his homer in the bottom of the first. He later settled for a measly single when the Dodgers exploded for four homers and seven runs against Grant Anderson in the sixth inning; Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Teoscar Hernández and Jason Heyward all went deep then. Smith is batting .296/.364/.509 with 10 homers, and he should be an easy choice to go to a second All-Star Game this summer.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #65
James Paxton worked six innings and allowed only one run against the Rangers in a win Tuesday.
Even with six days’ rest after a pair of short starts, Paxton’s velocity was down some tonight, and he struck out just two. Still, the Rangers couldn’t capitalize, collecting only two hits before Paxton exited. Paxton remains a difficult guy to trust at the moment, and the Dodgers might look to stash him on the IL for a time after Bobby Miller returns.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #33
Dane Dunning was tagged for six runs in 3 2/3 innings by the Dodgers on Tuesday.
Dunning was unlucky in the first, when Will Smith hit a 375-foot fly that would have been an out in most ballparks, only to go for a three-run homer in Dodger Stadium (Statcast said it would have left four ballparks). Still, Dunning also made his own trouble by walking three and hitting a batter before being pulled in the fourth. He’s on a poor run of late and his ERA is up to 4.80, but he does have a pretty good matchup Sunday in Seattle.
  • LAD Designated Hitter #17
Shohei Ohtani hit a two-run homer, walked twice, stole a base and scored three times Tuesday in the rout of the Rangers.
Ohtani is the first player to reach 15 homers (actually 16) and 15 steals this year. In fact, no one else has at least 12 of each. Only Elly De La Cruz, with 11 homers and 34 steals, tops Ohtani in the two categories combined.
  • LAA Catcher #14
Logan O’Hoppe said a major injury has been ruled out after he took a foul ball to the groin area during Tuesday’s game.
O’Hoppe was still hurting after the game, but it sounds like there’s a chance he could be ready to go on Wednesday. If not, Matt Thaiss will start.
