Matt Olson launched two homers, including a grand slam, and tallied six RBI on Saturday, powering the Braves to an 11-8 victory over the Rockies.
Olson took full advantage of Coors Field’s high-octane offensive environment to register his second multi-homer performance of the season, accomplishing the feat for the second time since July 31. The 30-year-old fantasy stalwart’s rough couple months to open the year are quickly becoming an afterthought since he’s hitting .231 (18-for-78) with seven homers and 16 RBI in 21 games since last month’s All-Star break.

Rockies optioned OF Jordan Beck to Triple-A Albuquerque.
The Zac Veen callup isn’t yet official, but as reported last night, Beck is returning to Triple-A. Given his lack of professional experience (he’s played a total of 89 games between Double- and Triple-A), this is definitely the right move if the Rockies weren’t going to play him regularly. Beck did start the first four games of the season, but he’d been on the bench for three of five since. He was 3-for-20 with no extra-base hits, though he did have three walks and three steals.

White Sox optioned LHP Brandon Eisert to Triple-A Charlotte.
No countermove yet, and since the White Sox are off today, it might not come until tomorrow. Tyler Gilbert returning from the IL seems like one possibility. Eisert, claimed off waivers from the Rays in February, had pitched three times for the White Sox, giving up four runs in three innings.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #96
Landon Knack, thought to be a candidate to start this week, is with the Dodgers in D.C. for Monday’s visit to the White House.
He’s yet to be officially recalled. The Dodgers need starters both Tuesday and Wednesday, though they could go with a bullpen game Wednesday if Tuesday’s game goes smoothly. Justin Wrobleski, currently in Triple-A, is one possibility to start Tuesday; he’d be on six days’ rest then. Knack would be on four days’ rest following his last Triple-A start, so he might be more in line for Wednesday. Bobby Miller isn’t an option, since he pitched Sunday.
  • PIT Starting Pitcher #53
Pirates RHP prospect Mike Burrows allowed one run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings in a start for Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday.
The Pirates are building up Burrow’s workload after he missed the beginning of last season following Tommy John surgery. The 24-year-old threw 51 1/3 innings last year and went 3 2/3 innings in his Triple-A debut last week. However, he needed 62 pitches to get through 2 1/3 on Sunday and was removed after striking out two and walking two. The Pirates will continue to build up his pitch count, but when he gets comfortably around 80 pitches, he could be an option for the big league rotation.
  • TB Center Fielder
Rays OF prospect Chandler Simpson went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and a steal for Triple-A Durham on Sunday.
Simpson, arguably the fastest player in all of baseball, is now up to five steals on the season while slashing .297/.325/.351 in eight games with nine runs scored, three strikeouts, and two walks. The Rays are playing Simpson exclusively in CF at Triple-A and are playing Jonny DeLuca exclusively in CF at the MLB level, so it seems that Simpson’s future is directly tied to DeLuca unless we see some position changes start to happen. DeLuca has gone 10-for-23 with four steals to start the season for the Rays and is in no jeopardy of losing his spot any time soon.
  • TB Starting Pitcher #36
Joe Boyle threw four shutout innings for Triple-A Durham on Sunday, allowing three hits and striking out four.
This was the quintessential Joe Boyle start. He showed off tremendous velocity and struck out four in four innings. However, he also walked four and needed 80 pitches to get through four innings. This is going to be a process for Tampa Bay to turn him into a reliable starter.
  • WSH Third Baseman #55
Nationals 3B prospect Brady House went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs scored, and three RBI for Triple-A Rochester on Sunday.
The 21-year-old has started the year going 11-for-30 with one home run, seven strikeouts, three walks, six runs scored, and six RBI. There’s a lot of season left to play, but he’s putting himself in a great place to get called up once Washington falls out of the playoff race and decides to move on from veteran Paul DeJong at third base.
  • WSH Left Fielder #22
Franchy Cordero went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI for Triple-A Rochester on Sunday.
Yes, that Franchy Cordero. After hitting .247/.322/.392 with nine homers, 53 RBI, and a 105/43 K/BB ratio over 447 plate appearances in Japan last year, Cordero is back stateside. He’s hitting .364 with a .985 OPS, one home run, and six RBI so far in the Triple-A season.
  • DET Right Fielder #30
Kerry Carpenter is not in the Tigers’ lineup on Monday against the Yankees.
The Yankees are throwing left-hander Carlos Rodon, so Carpenter will head to the bench with Manuel Margot starting in right field and Ryan Kreidler getting his third straight start in center field. Kreidler has started five of the last six games in center for the Tigers despite going 3-for-21 in those games. We’re not sure he’s a better option out there than playing Margot regularly.
  • MIN Relief Pitcher #51
Twins designated RHP Darren McCaughan for assignment
The Twins needed a fresh arm in the bullpen and decided to move on from McCaughan, who allowed one run on two hits in 2/3 innings against the Astros yesterday. However, that was the only run he has allowed in 5 1/3 innings this season while striking out six and walking one, so the Twins are gambling that nobody else will take a chance on the 29-year-old. Scott Blewett was called up to take his spot on the active roster.
