Phil Mickelson will not compete in next month’s WGC-Accenture Match Play. Instead, he will go on a family vacation.
“I’m going to end up missing the Match Play this year as we’re going to go on a family trip,” Mickelson, said Sunday after finishing his third round at the Humana Challenge, according to Golfweek. “So as I miss that tournament, it was easier to add this one, too.”
The Match Play, scheduled for Feb. 22-26, conflicts with his children’s spring break, which is usually reserved for a family vacation. The world No. 15 effectively substituted the Match Play for the Humana, creating a break in the six-event West Coast swing.
Mickelson will miss the event for the second time in three years to spend time with his family on vacation. In 2010, Mickelson took his wife, Amy, and three children on a trip postponed while she was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. He also did not compete in 2001, when the event was played in Australia.
Mickelson has never had much success in the 64-man tournament. Though he has reached the round of 16 five times, he made it as far as the quarterfinals only once, in 2004.
