Right-hander Edward Mujica, whom the A’s recently acquired from the Red Sox, was struck on the hand by a line drive Thursday and suffered a broken right thumb.
Mujica actually managed to pick up the ball and make a throw to first base for the out, but the ball had blood on it from a cut on his hand and he immediately left the game. And now he’s headed to the disabled list.
Mujica fell out of favor in Boston after posting a 4.03 ERA in 75 appearances for the Red Sox since last season, but the A’s picked him up cheaply to fill a less prominent role and he tossed 5.1 scoreless innings before the injury.
