Red Sox catcher Blake Swihart was hit in the catcher’s mask with a foul tip during Sunday’s Grapefruit League exhibition against the Rays. He left with a bruised jaw.
Thankfully, Swihart passed concussion tests after the game, Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports. He’s day-to-day with a bruised jaw.
Swihart, 24 next month, made his major league debut last season, batting .274/.319/.392 with five home runs and 31 RBI in 309 plate appearances. If he’s completely healthy by the time the regular season begins, he is expected to handle starting duties behind the plate.
Another Red Sox catcher, Ryan Hanigan, was scratched from Saturday’s game against the Marlins due to a headache. So, at the moment, Christian Vazquez is the healthiest backstop at the moment.
