Impending free agent A.J. Pierzynski has “no idea” if he’ll be back with White Sox

A.J. Pierzynski has raised his batting average from .231 to .272 by hitting .393 over the past 28 games, but his OPS is still a career-low .691 and the 33-year-old impending free agent told Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune that he has “no idea” if the White Sox will try to re-sign him. Coming into the season 24-year-old prospect Tyler Flowers seemed positioned to take over for Pierzynski behind the plate in 2011, but hitting just .220/.334/.434 with 16 homers and a 121/55 K/BB ratio in 100 games at Triple-A may have squashed those plans. Pierzynski has been incredibly durable, catching 1,000 innings in nine straight seasons, and even his current .691 OPS is actually right around the MLB average (.705) for the position, but handing out multi-year deals to catchers in their mid-30s rarely proves to be a good decision.
